Every question worth asking.

Everything you need to know before your first thread.

Getting started

Threaditate is a crafting kit for turning a photo you love into string art by hand. You upload the photo to the app to convert it into a thread pattern, and you follow the spoken instructions line by line on a 20-inch loom until your picture appears over six hours. No experience needed. Everything - the loom, the thread, and the app - ships in one box.

Yes! Although, some photos work better than others- try many! Crisp portraits and close-ups with clear contrast tend to come out best - the app reads light and shadow rather than fine detail. A favorite person, a pet, a pastime that means something to you. Upload it, and your hands and the app do the rest.

None. The app walks you through every step, one thread at a time, like an audio paint by number. There's nothing to figure out on your own. The first step is the same for everyone and the result always wows.

The kit

Your kit comes with a 20-inch loom with 240 attached pins, a number guide, thread, spool holder, phone holder, precision wand, foam resistance plug, mounts, thread, and access to the Threaditate app. Open the box and you have everything you need to start in five minutes.

Yes, the app is what makes Threaditate tick. Without it, you have string art. With it, you have a thread art session: image editing and real-time instructions, one step at a time, on iPhone and Android. Access is included with every kit.

Nothing extra. The loom, the pins, the thread, and the app are all you need. Find a comfortable spot with good light, and you're ready to begin. Choice of tea, aromatherapy, and background music are up to you though.

The process

Most pieces take six to eight hours, depending on the line count- each 500 lines takes under an hour, and we recommend 3000-4000 lines. Pause whenever, you don't have to finish in one sitting. The app saves your place after every step, so you can take it easy at your own pace.

Mistakes do not matter at all, there is no need to go back. Each missed step will get covered by the thousands of others. Dozens and dozens go unnoticed. The app remembers exactly where you stopped, down to the last thread you confirmed. Step away for an hour or a week, then pick up right where you left off.

Carry on from your last confirmed step. Mistakes disappear into the finished piece - the overall image is what your eye sees, not the individual threads. Carry on with grace and gentleness.

It rarely happens, but if it does, that means you're way too tight. If it breaks or your kitten claws it, just knot the two ends together in a dark area and keep going. The knot disappears against the shadow and won't show in your finished piece.

Only if the thread is under tension. Relax and drape loosely, as tightness adds up and may cause some bend, which looks cool too. The tension used is the only factor, thread mindfully for a flat finale or weave wildly for a slight warp. Both have different shadow effects. If you are unhappy with your results, just cut the thread off and rethread it, theres enough for multiple pieces.

Anytime. The app holds your progress automatically, so a Threaditate fits around your life. Some people finish in an afternoon. Others thread a little each evening over a week or few.

After you finish

Your finished piece is made to be seen. The 20-inch loom sits naturally on a wall, a shelf, a window sill, or hangs like a dreamcatcher. Find a spot with good light and let the art speak for itself.

Yes. When you're ready for a new picture, remove the thread and start fresh with a new pattern on the same loom. There is enough thread for multiple pieces per kit. Each loom holds one piece at a time.

Orders and shipping

We'll make it right. Reach out through our contact page with your order number and what's missing, and we'll send a replacement. We are a small family business and making this artform easy is important to us.

Good to know

Your photo is used only to create your pattern. We never share it. It self-deletes after 90 days since last opened.

Threaditate is about the making. The quiet hours you spend creating something by hand are the whole point, so we don't sell finished pieces. We give you the means to make your own. Or you can gift it to a friend and request a custom!
